- October 23, 2001 — Apple unveils iPod, a portable MP3 player with a 5GB hard disk for $399.
- March 20, 2002 — Apple introduces a second iPod model with a 10GB hard disk. Custom engraving, contacts and EQ support are made available on both models.
- July 17, 2002 — Second Generation iPods debut featuring solid state Touch Wheels and a 10GB or 20GB hard disks and Windows support. The old 5GB model is retained and also gets Windows support.
- April 28, 2003 — Third generations iPods are released in 10GB, 15GB & 30 GB sizes with Dock Connectors and . They are the first to feature On-the-go playlists.
- September 8, 2003 — The 15GB and 30GB iPods are replaced by otherwise identical 20GB and 40GB models.
- January 6, 2004 — The 10GB iPod is quietly replaced by a 15GB model.
- July 19, 2004 — 4G iPods come out in 20GB and 40GB capacities. They are thinner, have longer battery life and a new iPod mini style Click Wheel.
- October 26, 2004 — Apple introduces the iPod photo, which features a colour screen and comes in 40GB and 60GB versions. A U2 Special Edition of the 20GB iPod is released.
- February 23, 2005 — The iPod photo models are reconfigured. The 40GB model is replaced by a slimmer 30GB model and prices drop from $499 and $599 to $349 and $449. The "photo" branding is de-emphasized and most photo-related accessories are no longer bundled.
- June 28, 2005 — The iPod and iPod photo lines are merged. The new models are the same as the iPod photo but with standard iPod branding.
- October 12, 2005 — The 5G iPod is introduced. It features a larger screen and video playback and comes in 30GB and 60GB versions.
- June 6, 2006 — Apple re-introduces the U2 Special Edition iPod, this time as a 5G model.
- September 12, 2006 — The 5G iPod gets a brighter screen and improved video battery life.
- September 5, 2007 — Apple dubs the standard hard disk based iPod the "iPod classic", introducing a new aluminum design and 80GB and 160GB capacities
