Key dates
- May 14, 2002 — Apple introduces the Xserve, a rack mounted server with a choice of single or dual 1GHz G4s and new DDR memory architecture.
- February 10, 2003 — New Xserves have 1.33GHz processors and slot-loading drives.
- March 18, 2003 — A new Xserve Cluster Node model offers the processing power of a dual processor Xserve for the price of a single processor model, but with only one hard disk bay.
- January 6, 2004 — The Xserve G5 is introduced with a choice of single or dual 2.0GHz processors. It now uses Serial ATA for its hard disks.
- January 11, 2005 — The dual-processor Xserve G5 now comes with 2.3GHz chips. Both Xserve models now have Combo drives as standard.
- August 7, 2006 — The Xserve G5 is replaced with an Intel Xeon-based model, featuring four cores, built-in graphics and optional dual power supplies.
- January 8, 2008 — Xserve gets quad-core processors up to 3.0GHz
